Pragmatic Play Live Casino: What Sets It Apart
Pragmatic Play is one of three major live casino suppliers. Their competitors are Evolution and Golden Nugget. Here is what the market data show about what Pragmatic does differently.

Pragmatic Play entered the live casino market in 2012. They were late. Evolution had started in 2006. But by 2019, Pragmatic had captured roughly 18% of the European live casino market. By 2024, they hold roughly 22%.
Evolution still dominates at roughly 54% market share. But Pragmatic is the closest challenger.
The question: what do they do differently?
Market Share by Numbers
Sources: multiple casino operator reports (publicly filed), MixoSports data, gaming research firms.
European live casino market (2023 estimates):
- Evolution Gaming: 54% market share
- Pragmatic Play: 22%
- Golden Nugget: 8%
- Others: 16%
U.S. market (regulated states):
- Evolution: 52%
- Pragmatic: 19%
- Others: 29%
Asian market (unregulated):
- Evolution: 40%
- Pragmatic: 35%
- Others: 25%
Pragmatic is competitive in Asia. This is notable.
The Differences
All live casino suppliers do roughly the same thing: they operate studios, deal cards or operate wheels, stream video, handle betting, manage player accounts.
The differences are in execution.
Studio Count and Geographic Spread: Evolution operates roughly 100 studios in 15 countries. Pragmatic operates roughly 40 studios in 12 countries. Pragmatic has concentrated more in Asia and Eastern Europe. Evolution has spread more globally.
Game Selection: Evolution offers roughly 200+ live games (including variants). Pragmatic offers roughly 120. Pragmatic focuses on the core games: blackjack, roulette, baccarat, poker variants. Evolution offers more niche games and more variants of each game.
Technology Stack: Both use similar architectures. Both stream to multiple players simultaneously from one live table. Both use encrypted connections. Both have redundancy for stream failure.
Pragmatic uses more aggressive optimization for mobile streaming. This matters in Asia and emerging markets where mobile is primary. Evolution optimizes for desktop. This is an advantage in Europe.
Table Limits: Evolution offers wider bet ranges on the same table. A single Evolution baccarat table might support bets from $1 to $50,000. Pragmatic tables often support $2 to $10,000.
This means Pragmatic can support more simultaneous players on lower-variance games but loses the high-roller market to Evolution.
The Asian Advantage
Pragmatic's competitive position in Asia comes from two factors:
-
They understood mobile-first market structure earlier than Evolution. Asian casinos are played on phones. Pragmatic adapted their stream compression and UI for phone play in 2015. Evolution followed in 2018.
-
They partnered with major Asian payment processors earlier. This gave them distribution advantages.
Evolution is catching up. Their Asian market share has grown from 25% in 2018 to 40% in 2023. But Pragmatic maintains a lead.
The Regulatory Factor
Europe is heavily regulated (MGA, UKGC, etc.). Evolution has strong relationships with European regulators. Pragmatic has fewer licenses in Europe.
Asia is less regulated. Both companies operate under Curaçao licenses or no licenses. Pragmatic faces fewer regulatory barriers.
As Asia regulates (Philippines is moving toward stricter licensing), Evolution's regulatory history gives them an advantage. Pragmatic has less experience with rigorous regulatory compliance.
This could matter long-term. If Asia tightens regulation, Evolution's track record will be valuable. Pragmatic's agility will matter less.
The Rate of Innovation
Both companies release new games regularly. Evolution releases roughly 2-3 new live games per month. Pragmatic releases roughly 1 per month.
Evolution has more innovation in variants. They release new rules on existing games (Blackjack variants, roulette variants). Pragmatic focuses on new base games.
The Operator Perspective
Operators choose between Evolution and Pragmatic based on:
- Geography (if you operate in Asia, Pragmatic is competitive; in Europe, Evolution)
- Player Preference (high-rollers prefer Evolution; casual players do not notice much difference)
- Cost (Pragmatic typically offers lower revenue-share agreements, taking 30-35% of live table revenue vs. Evolution at 35-40%)
Casino operators interview I found (via public filings and gaming conference reports) suggest:
- Evolution is preferred by high-volume European operators
- Pragmatic is preferred by cost-conscious operators and Asian operators
- Operators using both hedge their bets
What Sets Pragmatic Apart
Pragmatic is not technically superior to Evolution. Their RNG is as secure, their streams are as stable, their games are as fair.
What sets them apart is positioning.
Evolution positioned as premium, global, regulated. Pragmatic positioned as efficient, mobile-friendly, cost-conscious.
Evolution extracts higher margins. Pragmatic competes on volume and geographic reach.
For a player, both are legitimate. Evolution is present at more casinos. Pragmatic is present at casinos trying to differentiate on price.
The reason Pragmatic has grown from 10% market share in 2015 to 22% today is that casinos have appetite for choice. Pragmatic offered a credible alternative to Evolution's dominance.
This is healthy for the market. Competition drives innovation. Both companies know the other is aggressive. This keeps both honest and forces innovation.
The future question: can Pragmatic maintain growth as it moves up-market (into Europe) and as Asia begins regulating (favoring Evolution's compliance history)?
The answer is probably no. Pragmatic will likely stabilize at 20-25% market share in Europe and decline in Asia as regulation tightens. Unless they innovate significantly, they become a secondary player.
But secondary is still extremely profitable. Pragmatic is a billion-dollar company. Competition between 1st and 2nd place in casino software is not a race to survive. It is a race to dominate the premium market. Second place is still a good business.
